Google’s Startups AI Accelerator Africa program, Applications Now Open.

Google on Monday announced that applications are now open for the 8th cohort of its Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program, which is particularly targeting startups leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to tackle critical challenges and uncover new opportunities across the continent.

Startups are crucial drivers of innovation, economic growth, and job creation. They play a key role in solving pressing societal issues. With digital transformation gaining pace in Africa, startups are instrumental in defining the continent’s future in sectors ranging from fintech and agritech to healthcare and education.

The Google for Startups Accelerator Africa is a three-month, equity-free virtual program designed to support African startups by providing them with mentorship, technical resources, and access to a global network of experts and investors.

The upcoming Class 8 program, running from June to September 2024, will offer a variety of benefits:

  • Equity-free support: Up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits.
  • Mentorship: Tailored advice from Google AI experts, seasoned entrepreneurs, and industry leaders.
  • Technical workshops: Comprehensive training sessions focusing on AI/ML development, product strategy, and scaling strategies.
  • Global network: Opportunities to connect with potential investors, partners, and customers.
  • Community: Access to a supportive network of fellow founders who are encountering similar challenges and opportunities.

Applications for this cohort are open from April 29 to May 20, 2024. Eligible startups must be based in Africa or should be developing solutions centered around African needs, and must be utilizing AI/ML in innovative ways.

Google provides a boost to African startups through its accelerator program

Since its launch in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program has supported 106 startups across 17 African countries, collectively raising over $263 million and creating more than 2,800 direct jobs.

Participants in the program gain early access to new Google products and tools, as well as entry into Google’s extensive network of industry experts. Selected startups become part of the Google for Startups Accelerator Global Community, benefiting from a network of alumni and mentors which fosters enhanced collaboration and support.

Under the banner “AI for Good,” Google is dedicated to developing AI solutions that address global challenges within Africa. Additional perks of the program include marketing spotlight opportunities, training in design, marketing, and leadership, and strategic guidance on company and product development.
