The Office of the African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy and Google are excited to announce the launch of the #DiscoverMyAfrica Shorts Challenge, a dynamic month-long initiative aimed at celebrating the rich diversity, heritage, and vibrant spirit of Africa.
Throughout the month of May, YouTube creators from across the continent are encouraged to upload short videos showcasing their unique perspectives, using the hashtag #DiscoverMyAfrica.
“#DiscoverMyAfrica empowers African youth to globally share their stories and rich cultural heritage,” stated Chido Mpemba, African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy.
“This partnership with Google supports creative expression and stimulates dialogue on content responsibility, digital preservation, and the impact of AI on Africa’s creative industries. This initiative aligns with our vision for a digitally-enabled Africa that leverages its cultural wealth for economic growth and social progress,” Mpemba added.
The challenge invites creators to explore and exhibit the myriad aspects of African life, including music, art, food, fashion, and local landmarks. To amplify Africa’s thriving music scene, YouTube will host Music Nights in Nigeria and South Africa, featuring the lively beats of Afrobeats and Amapiano. Additionally, two dedicated playlists, “Africa’s Next Wave” and “Africa Superstars,” will celebrate both emerging talents and established icons that contribute to Africa being a global music powerhouse.
Highlighting YouTube’s exclusive new content, Nollywood superstar Osas Ighodaro will take viewers through the luxurious side of Lagos with her new show “Spa with Osas.” Enioluwa and The Geng are set to unveil the drama of high school elites in their eagerly awaited series “All of Us.” Furthermore, comedy sensation Broda Shaggi will deliver laughter with his latest venture, “Shaggi’s Palava.”
In their commitment to fostering the continent’s creative landscape, Google and the African Union will also provide specialized workshops for aspiring filmmakers and content creators. These include a Nollywood-focused workshop in Nigeria and broader #DiscoverMyAfrica workshops designed to sharpen skills and broaden the reach of creators at all levels.
“We are dedicated to supporting the diverse voices and talents that define Africa’s creative landscape,” said Addy Awofisayo, Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa at YouTube. “These initiatives offer invaluable resources and platforms for African filmmakers, musicians, and content creators to tell their stories and engage with audiences worldwide.”
