Basic Requirements for the Germany Opportunity Card.

There are prerequisite requirements that must be met before you consider applying for the opportunity card. These includes:

  •   A minimum of two years of professional training recognised by the country in which it was acquired.
  • A university degree recognised by the country in which it was acquired.
  • You should have at least two years of vocational training recognized by the country in which it was acquired.
  • An adequate knowledge of German language at A1 or English language at B2.
  • A proof of adequate financial funds to support oneself while searching for a job.

How to Apply for the Germany Opportunity Card. 

For qualified workers who wish to work in Germany, the opportunity card offers an attractive option involving several procedures. However, this guide will walk you through the entire application process:

Document Preparation

Make sure you have the necessary documents for your application. These typically include:

  • Copy of your original passport valid for at least more than 6 months.
  • Proof of academic qualifications. (degrees, diplomas, and transcripts)
  • Proof of work experience. (statement from employer or work contract)
  • Proof of German and English language proficiency.
  • Proof of sufficient financial means; you must earn a minimum of €1027/month.

Points Calculation

Take into account factors such as age, education, work experience, and language skills for the award of points. Ensure that you meet the minimum points required to qualify.

Submit Application

You can submit your application through the following methods, but ensure that you correctly translate all documents into German or English and have them certified if required.

  • Online Application: To submit your application online, visit the Consular Service Portal.
  • German Consulate: Submit your application at a German embassy in your country of origin.

Application Fee

You will pay an application fee of €75 and the method of payment will be specified during the application process.

Processing Time

The processing time usually takes between 3-6 months but it varies. The authorities review your application and documents during this period.

Card Issuance

If your application is approved, you will receive an opportunity card. You can live and work in Germany for up to 12 months with the possibility of renewal of this card for another 3 years.

Point System of the Germany Opportunity Card.

The points system evaluates various criteria, including education, work experience, language skills, age, and other factors such as previous residence in Germany or applying with a spouse. Here is a breakdown of the point distribution: 

1.Education Experience

  • 4 points: A partially recognized foreign professional education in Germany.
  • 1 point: A university degree or vocational training in occupations of high demand with labor shortage like IT and healthcare professionals, skilled workers. (electricians, plumbers and welders)

2. Work Experience

  • 4 points: Permission to practice a regulated profession. (lawyer, doctor, teacher) 
  • 3 points: 5 years of work experience (in the last seven years) in a skilled profession and a preceding 2 years of professional training according to the rules of your home country.
  • 2 points: 2 years of work experience in the last five years.

3. Age

  • 2 points: If you are 35 years or younger.
  • 1 point: If you are between 36 and 40 years. 
  • 3 Points: A very good German at level B2.   

4. Language Skills

  • 2 Points: German at level B1.
  • 1 Point: A reasonable German at level A2.
  • 1 Point: A very good English level C1.

5. Connection to Germany

  • 1 Point: You must have previously stayed in Germany for at least 6 months, with proof of it.

6. Qualification of Spouse

  • 1 Point: If your spouse also applies and qualifies for the opportunity card.
