Nineteen innovators from across Africa have been selected for the second edition of the AU Digital and Innovation Fellowship Programme, an initiative led by AfriLabs and the African Union (AU) to drive digital transformation and socio-economic development on the continent. The announcement follows a competitive selection process that drew over 3,000 applications, showcasing the vibrant tech talent in Africa.

The fellowship, a 12-month program hosted at AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, offers the innovators an unparalleled opportunity to act as resident fellows, working directly with 13 AU host units. During their tenure, fellows will focus on strengthening data management systems, enhancing digital workflows, and co-developing solutions to operational challenges within the AU. Beyond their technical contributions, fellows will engage in tailored capacity-building workshops, leadership training, and mentorship from industry leaders.

Nanko Madu, Director of Programmes at AfriLabs, highlighted the fellowship’s transformative potential, emphasizing its role in bridging the gap between talent and opportunity while fostering a culture of innovation within the AU. “This program is about empowering Africa’s brightest minds to create solutions that leave a lasting impact. Madu stated, “We are investing in Africa’s digital future.”

The GIZ DataCipation project supports the program, working to enhance citizen engagement in AU processes through technology. The fellowship further aligns with the AU’s broader mandate to leverage digital tools for good governance and economic inclusion.

The selected fellows, drawn from diverse professional backgrounds, will also benefit from a host of opportunities, including mentorship by leading tech experts, peer-to-peer learning, and participation in high-profile events like the AfriLabs Annual Gathering. These resources, coupled with monthly stipends and full travel support, aim to ensure fellows have the tools and network to excel in their roles.

This initiative underscores the AU’s commitment to fostering innovation and creating sustainable solutions that address Africa’s unique challenges. By equipping the next generation of tech leaders with the skills and platform to succeed, the fellowship is not just a step forward for the AU but a leap for the entire continent.
