Bosun Tijani Advocates for Moderate Telecom Tariff Increase.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria Minister of Digital Economy.

Amid growing public concern over a possible increase in telecommunications tariffs, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has assured Nigerians that any tariff adjustment will remain moderate, ranging between 30% and 60%. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the Minister sought to allay fears and provide clarity on the government’s stance.

Minister Tijani underscored the vital role of the telecommunications sector in Nigeria’s economic development, highlighting its substantial contribution of 14% to 16% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He also emphasized the industry’s significance in job creation, directly employing over 15,000 individuals and indirectly supporting around 500,000 jobs nationwide.

The Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by telecom operators, particularly the need to invest in infrastructure and sustain high-quality services in an ever-evolving industry. However, he stressed that the government is committed to balancing these industry requirements with the need to protect consumers from excessive financial burdens.

“The government remains focused on creating an equitable and sustainable environment that supports both the growth of telecom operators and the affordability of services for Nigerians,” Tijani stated.

This announcement brings some reassurance amid ongoing debates about a potential tariff hike. It reflects a cautious approach by the government, aiming to prioritize consumer interests while fostering a competitive and resilient telecommunications market. The Minister’s comments also signal a commitment to ensuring that the sector continues to thrive as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital economy and broader development goals.

By seeking to maintain this balance, the government hopes to build trust with the public while encouraging further investments that drive innovation and expand access to quality telecommunication services across the country.
