BasiGo, the leading provider of electric bus solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, has announced a major expansion in Rwanda with the delivery of 28 new electric buses—its largest deployment in the country to date. This expansion marks a significant milestone in Rwanda’s transition towards clean and sustainable public transportation, reinforcing its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing e-mobility solutions.
BasiGo, which provides state-of-the-art electric buses along with charging and maintenance services, is revolutionizing public transport by making electric buses more accessible and affordable. Through its pay-as-you-drive financing model, bus operators can acquire electric buses without the high upfront cost, as the battery and charging services are separately financed and paid for on a subscription basis.
Following its successful expansion into Rwanda, the company is now preparing to roll out 100 electric buses across the country by 2025. The initial batch of 28 buses is already en route and expected to arrive in Kigali next month, where they will be deployed across city and inter-city routes.
Scaling Up Charging Infrastructure for Seamless Operations
To support the growing electric bus fleet, BasiGo is also expanding its charging infrastructure network in Rwanda. The company is upgrading its Rwandex charging and service depot, which will feature 1 MW of power, ensuring that 25 electric buses can be charged simultaneously every night. This will significantly improve operational efficiency and allow for seamless overnight recharging.
Additionally, BasiGo is developing more charging stations across the country to support inter-city electric bus operations, ensuring that Rwanda’s transport ecosystem is well-equipped for a smooth transition to e-mobility.
The demand for clean, efficient, and cost-effective transport solutions is rapidly growing in Rwanda, with over 360 reservations already placed by bus operators looking to either replace aging diesel buses or expand their fleets with electric alternatives.
Through BasiGo’s pay-as-you-drive model, operators benefit from a comprehensive service package that includes:
- Battery subscription and charging services
- Ongoing vehicle maintenance and servicing
- Insurance coverage
- A guaranteed 90% uptime for operational reliability
This holistic approach removes the financial and technical barriers to electric bus adoption, making it easier for transport companies to transition to clean energy solutions.
Driving Rwanda’s Vision for Sustainable Transport
Rwanda has positioned itself as a regional leader in sustainability and green mobility, with strong government policies supporting the shift to electric vehicles. The country’s ambitious e-mobility strategy aims for universal electrification of public transport, and BasiGo’s expansion is a major step towards achieving this vision.
“BasiGo is proud to be delivering the largest shipment of electric buses to date into Rwanda,” said Jit Bhattacharya, CEO and co-founder at BasiGo. “Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable transport has created an ideal environment for private sector investment and innovation in e-mobility. With this first major shipment of electric buses, BasiGo is proud to help Rwanda take a major step toward universal, electrified public transport.”
Finally, BasiGo scales its operations in Rwanda, the company is playing a key role in reshaping public transportation in Africa, offering economically viable, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced electric buses that align with global sustainability goals.
