Nairaland Temporarily Departs from Cloudflare After Two-Day Downtime.

Nairaland has successfully resumed online operations, emerging a few days after its web server faced deactivation by Cloudflare, a hosting provider based in the United States. The suspension was attributed to ethical concerns raised by Cloudflare.

While we are not fully back, most features of the site are operational. We acknowledge there is still a long road ahead, and additional downtime may occur; please don’t be alarmed.

“We had to migrate Nairaland to a temporary host to restore service,” said Seun Osewa, the founder. “While we are not fully back, most features of the site are operational. We acknowledge there is still a long road ahead, and additional downtime may occur; please don’t be alarmed.”

With Nairaland’s restoration, the platform is set to not only consider alternative hosting options but also prioritize content moderation to prevent a recurrence of the incidents that led to its deactivation.

In response to Osewa’s note on the platform, a user on X social media recommended, “Forum members should practice civility, avoid ethnic profiling, and refrain from using offensive language. Moderators should be vigilant in ensuring the Forum is sanitized. The implementation of bots or algorithms to promptly take down offensive posts is essential. Additionally, management should conduct periodic business continuity tests and have contingency plans in place.

Established in 2005, Nairaland stands as a prominent online forum in Nigeria, securing the seventh position among the most visited websites in the country with over 28 million visits in November. Recent sentiments from numerous users have voiced the need for an overhaul of its 18-year-old user interface (UI) and content moderation strategy. The existing framework has allowed the presentation of inappropriate advertisements on the platform, leading to calls for enhancements.

Seun Osewa emphasized the significance of Nairaland, stating, “Nairaland is too important for us to let this happen again.”
