Samsung To Unveil AI-Powered Phones Later This Month.

Samsung has scheduled a news conference in San Jose, California, on Jan. 17 to reveal its latest Galaxy phones, intensifying its competition with Apple.

Holding a 20% share in the global smartphone market, Samsung competes closely with Apple, which holds a 16% market share, as reported by Counterpoint Research. In the U.S. phone market, Samsung maintains a 25% share, trailing behind Apple’s dominant 53% share. The introduction of unique features not found on the iPhone could enhance Samsung’s appeal and attract a broader customer base.

On Tuesday evening, Samsung announced that its upcoming devices will provide a “new mobile experience driven by AI.” Although the exact details remain unclear, recent statements from chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm and competitors like Google may offer some insights.

In its U.S. smartphones, Samsung typically incorporates Qualcomm chips. The anticipated new devices, likely to be named the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, are expected to leverage Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 designed for Android phones. Notably, Samsung has a history of being among the first smartphone manufacturers to adopt the latest offerings from Qualcomm.

In October, Qualcomm announced that its latest Snapdragon chips enable smartphones to run generative artificial intelligence applications directly on the device. This capability facilitates the operation of smaller versions of applications like ChatGPT without the need for an internet connection. On-device implementations of AI chatbots enhance privacy by eliminating the necessity to transmit queries to the cloud.

Additionally, Qualcomm showcased how its chips can generate images based on text prompts. For instance, inputting “create an image that shows a man driving a car” would result in the chip generating a corresponding picture. This functionality is akin to the capability of Google’s Tensor G3 chip in the Pixel 8 Pro, which enables the creation of custom phone wallpapers based on user-selected words.

The Pixel 8 Pro additionally incorporates support for Google’s Gemini Nano AI model, enabling the generation of text message replies, transcription of recorded conversations, and various other functionalities. AI is frequently employed to enhance the quality of videos and photos as well.
