Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has removed Babatunde Irukera from his position as the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
According to Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson, this decision is part of Tinubu’s initiative to overhaul and realign key government agencies to protect consumer rights in Nigeria. Alexander Okoh, Director-General and CEO of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, has also been dismissed.
The two ousted Chief Executives are instructed to hand over to the next most senior officer in their respective agencies, pending the appointment of new Chief Executive Officers,” stated Ngelale. “By this directive of the President, their removal from office takes immediate effect.”
In response to his dismissal, Irukera remarked that he leaves behind “a robust institutional advocate in the FCCPC, [and] an outstanding team of professionals who work there daily for the cause of fair markets.”
