Microsoft Expands Cloud Reach With New South African Data Centre.

Microsoft South Africa

Microsoft has announced its ambitious project to establish a cutting-edge data center campus in Kosmosdal, Centurion, in South Africa. This significant investment in technology infrastructure underscores the tech giant’s dedication to enhancing data management and cloud computing capabilities across the region.

The company is currently in the initial stages of this venture and aims to expand its cloud infrastructure within South Africa. This expansion is in response to the increasing demand for cloud and AI services and solutions from both the public and private sectors in Africa.

Microsoft is also committed to engaging with the local community in Kosmosdal, including the municipality, local organizations, and residents. The company emphasizes its intention to develop the data center in a manner that is environmentally sustainable and beneficial to the local community.

Microsoft was the second major cloud services provider, or “hyperscaler,” to launch in South Africa. The company experienced several delays in the launch of its local Azure services, which allowed Huawei to debut its cloud computing services in the country slightly ahead of Microsoft.

Microsoft officially launched data centers in South Africa in March 2019, with facilities located in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Further enhancing its services, the company introduced Azure Availability Zones in the South Africa North region in October 2021. Celebrating a 30-year legacy in South Africa.

Microsoft has reiterated its commitment to driving technological innovation, and digital empowerment, and making significant contributions in terms of infrastructure, innovation, skills development, and enterprise growth for the benefit of all South Africans.

The company, founded by Bill Gates, stated, “The establishment of this data center campus marks the next step in Microsoft’s commitment to accelerating digital transformation in South Africa and across the African continent. We aim to ensure that our approach is inclusive, reliable, and responsible.”

The Cloud Expansion Plan

In a recent virtual press conference, Microsoft emphasized that its new initiative would boost cloud capacity and capabilities, propelling faster organizational growth. The company’s South African data centers have started providing Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform online services, catering to a wide range of organizational needs.

Furthermore, Microsoft highlighted the Power Platform’s low-code/no-code feature, which empowers individuals within organizations to quickly develop custom solutions, minimizing the dependence on IT departments.

Karin Jones, Microsoft South Africa’s Director of Business Applications GTM, noted that organizational leaders are increasingly in search of digital tools to foster innovation and break down barriers between data sources, individuals, processes, and insights. She underscored the advantage of having these cloud services hosted locally in South Africa, which allows local enterprises to transition to the cloud securely while meeting data residency, sovereignty, and compliance standards.

This announcement from Microsoft arrived simultaneously with Google’s introduction of a new Google Cloud region in South Africa, marking a significant moment as the country sees increased investment from leading cloud services providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, both of which have already established substantial cloud infrastructure and data centers in South Africa.
