Tea or Coffee? How do you enjoy it?

Tea with honey. I have not had coffee in over a decade.

Can you tell us about your journey into Cybersecurity?

Like many in cybersecurity, I didn’t start my career in this field. As a child, I wanted to become a medical doctor, but that ambition faded in my teens when I realized I couldn’t handle the sight of blood.

Without a clear career path, I discovered a passion for computers, leading me to apply for a degree in Computer Engineering. The university, however, offered me a place in Management Information Systems. After earning my Bachelor’s degree, I began working as a Risk Analyst in a bank.

Four years later, I got tired of the routine in the bank. I wanted a change but I was not sure of what I wanted. The only way out was by having a second degree. I did not have any course in mind. I used the idea of my friend studying “forensic science” to search for courses and that was how I found myself studying Information Security and Computer Forensics. This course changed my life completely. I completed the course in a year, graduating with Distinction. I moved back to Nigeria in December 2014 and got my first job in January 2015 as a Senior Analyst in Governance, Risk, and Compliance.

This job exposed me to the consulting world, transforming my career. Over the years, I’ve worked as a consultant and industry practitioner, helping organizations align with best practice requirements like ISO 27001, PCI DSS, NIST CSF, Cyber Essentials, and GDPR.

I often joke that I’m “a walking ISO 27001 toolkit,” having implemented it in over 60 organizations. My journey shows that cybersecurity is accessible to everyone, regardless of their educational background. Hard work, passion, and dedication are the keys to success.

Driven by my thirst for knowledge, I advanced my education. While I didn’t become a “medical doctor,” I’ve achieved the title of “Dr” in Academia—reflecting my contributions to research and the cybersecurity field.

Did you have any role models or mentors who influenced your career path?

My friend influenced my career path. Initially, I wanted to study Business Information Systems in my second degree. I changed to Information Security and Computer Forensics when I realized she was studying Forensics.

You are the founder of CyBlack, What was the vision behind creating CyBlack, and what gap in the cybersecurity landscape does it aim to Fill?

During my Master’s program, I felt isolated. As an international student, I didn’t have the chance to connect with other cybersecurity students at different universities. I also struggled to gain hands-on skills or experience. It was also a challenge navigating my coursework in a new environment. All this led to the creation of Cyblack.

Cyblack began as an idea in 2021, born from a desire to change the narrative. I wanted to build a thriving community that supports cybersecurity beginners. Cyblack offers internships, community engagement, cybersecurity training, mentorship, certification guidance, and academic support.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”

Now in its third year, Cyblack’s impact has been incredible. We’ve helped over 250 people secure jobs and offered direct support to more than 1,000 individuals to achieve their cybersecurity goals. We have a reach of over 30,000 across our social media platforms for the purpose of community engagement.

What does a typical day look like for you in your current role?

My current role is a big one. I am involved in so many activities. I support organizations to achieve compliance with best practice standards and frameworks. I also support people in achieving their Cybersecurity goals. My typical day involves a minimum of 5 meetings.

What project are you most proud of in your career and why?

My PhD. I am super proud of myself for achieving it. I have the highest qualification that can be achieved, What a big WIN…

I am proud because I achieved this against all odds. It’s a testament to my hard work and resilience as I faced several challenges while doing the PhD. It’s rare to see someone combine a PhD with full-time employment and other activities.

The evolving Cybersecurity landscape, introduction of new technologies, and sophistication of Cyber criminals will continue to make Cybersecurity exciting and there will always be something to look forward to. A few years ago, Artificial Intelligence, Threat Intelligence, Cloud Security and Extended Detection and Response (XDR) were not trending topics in Cybersecurity. A lot of changes have happened over the years and this in itself, is an exciting part of Cybersecurity.

If you weren’t in cybersecurity, what career do you think you’d be In?

I love teaching people, so maybe anything that would require me to teach. I love Mathematics, nothing complex though. It won’t be bad to be a Maths teacher, Lol.

What has been the most rewarding experience in your cybersecurity career so far?

It gives me joy to see people thrive in this field. The people I have mentored are also mentoring and teaching others. It is fulfilling and rewarding.

Myth or fact? Every cybersecurity role requires writing code.

Myth.

Where do you see CyBlack in the next five years, and how do you plan to expand its influence?

Cyblack is a force to reckon with. We are partners with global organizations like CISCO and Let’s Defend. In the coming years, the impact will be huge. I see Cyblack being sponsored to provide more support to the Cybersecurity community. I also see us securing more solid partnerships that will transform the lives of people. I will continue to promote Cyblack and the good work we do at Cyblack. I hope that in the coming years, we can expand the reach of the student community to other countries in Europe and Africa.

How has CyBlack evolved since its inception, and what are your future plans for the conference?

When Cyblack started, I was under pressure with a lot of operational work to keep the community going. Currently, we have people who are volunteering in various capacities. This has greatly reduced the burden on myself and other founders.

The future plan for Cyblack conference is to have a bigger conference where people will attend from different countries, not limited to only the United Kingdom.
